Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery patients are among the happiest of all plastic surgery patients because they both look better and feel better following surgery.  When women have large, burdensome breasts, they frequently suffer from a condition called symptomatic macromastia.  Symptomatic macromastia is considered to be a medical problem that may include the following symptoms:

• Pain in the neck, shoulders, breasts, and upper or lower back

There are some key concepts that can help you understand breast lift and prepare you for your consultation. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• There are several different techniques for breast reduction. Your surgeon will explain your options regarding incisions and shape.  He or she will then recommend the most appropriate technique for you.
• Candidates for should be physically healthy and bothered by their overly large breast. 
• You can expect to miss about two weeks of work.
• When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, breast reduction is very safe.

Out of town patients often begin with a virtual consultation online, where they meet their plastic surgeon and discuss the desired changes they would like to make.  Goals are discussed and photographs are reviewed to develop an individual treatment plan for each patient.  The surgeon provides information on expected outcomes and any risks of the procedure(s).  Once in Colombia, patients receive a personal consultation at their chosen plastic surgery center.  The surgeon discusses all aspects of desired procedures, and performs a complete physical examination and evaluation the past medical history. Procedure:

Breast reduction in Colombia is typically performed with a combination of general and local anesthesia.  The surgery can be achieved through a variety of incision patterns and techniques. The appropriate technique for you will be determined based on:

• Breast size and shape
• The size and position of your areolas
• The degree of breast reductioin
• Skin quality and elasticity as well as the amount of extra skin

Recovery:

This procedure can be completed in just a few hours at an outpatient surgery suite in Colombia.  You will go home after the procedure and rest for at least 24 hours, after which you may gradually increase your activity as tolerated.  Recovery from a breast reduction tends to be swift because the surgery does not involve the underlying muscles, bones or internal organs.  After your breast reduction procedure is completed, dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions. You’ll need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal.  A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect after breast lift surgery.

Although many factors are involved with determining your actual recovery time for breast redcution, you will likely experience a post-surgical recovery period of 24 to 48 hours and an additional reduced-activity period of a few days.  You may experience mild soreness and swelling for a few weeks.  Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of your plastic surgeon.  Over time, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.

After surgery, you will need to wear a snug elastic dressing, girdle, or body stocking over the treated area for several weeks. Two or three days after your procedure you may resume non-strenuous activities.
